Shy Town, P Fork #1

In honor of the awesome time I had at the Pitchfork Festival, I’m gonna throw up some tracks from my best of the fest. So here’s me highlighting some of my favorite acts:

Spank Rock – Bump
They may have lost their low end 2 songs into their set, but they didn’t let it stop them from rocking the shit out of that tent. They ended with the stage packed with crowd members as they stood atop the speakers half way between b-boy stances and conquistador poses. It’s hip-hop that comes off as so effortlessly forward thinking that it put the later set by Def Jukkies’ Mr. Lif and Aesop Rock to shame, mainly because they aim for your feet and leave it to their instincts to take care of your head.

The Futureheads – He Knows
While The Futureheads certainly aren’t unknowns at this point, I have to shout them out for making one of the better appearances, especially since the previous time I saw them I wasn’t so impressed. This song was a standout of the set, bringing to life the musical juggle that’s at the heart of its structure and giving it an even more impassioned sound.

CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy) – Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above
If I had to call someone the best act of the show, I’d have trouble putting anyone over CSS. After hearing some buzz regarding their recent NYC show (mainly that it fucking killed), I marked their set as a big “to do”; and man did they do. Much like Spank Rock (who they should totally go on tour with), CSS took an audience of strangers and turned them into longtime fans in a matter of seconds. Their instantly infectious energy and stage presence (and crowd surfing presence) had the whole crowd dancing their asses off (myself included). I love the current trend towards saying “fuck the cool and just dance whatever way’s fun for you” that seems to be an integral part of the music experience (hyphy, I’m looking at you), and this certainly fits nicely at the top of it.

Will continue another day (more great bands to highlight incl. Danielson, Man Man, Liars…)

You have a very interesting taste in music Dave. I dunno i guess CSS just ins’t my style…i mean the singers accent was pretty funny but because of that it almost distracted me from the words and music.

Spank Rock was off the hook though they remind me of the supersonic sketch.

Jawsh–I don’t know if you’re near NYC, but I’ve already organized a game for this Saturday at 2PM in Washington Square Park. You (and everyone else) are absolutely invited.

I saw you at Pitchfork 2 or 3 times. I should have said something but I was too surprised at seeing the real life OE crew.

Is that girl from CSS the lead singer of Cibo Matto? Cuz they sound similar… Awesome song though 😀
