And the direct translation of what he wrote was "To Fail Epic".

Wat you wanted to write was something along the lines of "Épique échouer".

I knew taking french for 12 years would finally pay off.

Well considering "epic fail" can be seen as meaning "really, really big failure", and thusly can be concluded that "epic" even in the English sense is a relative size, then yes.
