I just got his Christmas box set, which is amazing if only for the awesome goodies included. (Songbook with lyrics and chords, stories, a family portrait, a comic strip, stickers... it's Sufjan happiness in a box, I wish every album had this.) As for the music itself, I am listening to it right now, and I think it will take a few tries since I generally don't like Christmas music, but [a lamp just fell on my head. hold on. a lamp just fell on my head. okay, I am okay. that was weird.] since the style is very much his own, I can see it joining A Charlie Brown Christmas (Vince Guaraldi love) on my list of The Only Tolerable Christmas Music Ever Produced. Either way, it was a great deal for the amount of music (2 hours, plus the 2nd Asthmatic Kitty sampler) and tons of extras.

Over the past 6 months, Seven Swans and The Avalanche have been my favorite albums. That's always subject to change of course (Illinoise was my first favorite), which is one of the reasons why Sufjan is my favorite musician. I sincerely can't get over how incredible he is. And I'm bummed that he's going to be in New York during the school week in February, I will never be able to see him perform live enough times to be satisfied.

The only thing I have by him is Illinois and a few other assorted songs. I'd like to get a lot more.

The only thing anyone has by him is Illinoise. That's the only reason anyone really knows who he is. Embarassed

Kevin-- what do you like of what you've heard? I'd be happy to send any songs or even full albums I have your way via email/aim/those websites where you can host files for 24 hours.

The albums I have, in chronological order I think, for reference:
A Sun Came
Greetings From Michigan
Seven Swans
Come On Feel The Illinoise!
The Avalanche
Songs For Christmas

And if anyone is interested, I have the mp3 clip of the NPR show explaining the background of Lord God Bird (as well as the song itself but if you want the clip you probably already have the song). I'm not sure if it's still on NPR's website, which is why I offer. It's pretty neat, and not too long (under 15 min), with interviews of the people who live in the town.

AND. I think Typhoid is saying that Sufjan has only gained widespread popularity from Illinois, and it's a shame that he isn't more well known for his other music. A lot of Sufjan fans use it as a jumping-off point, but a good number of people never venture further into his other albums. He meant to add, we'd love to share recommendations (and mp3s in my case) so that more people can appreciate and continue to share his music.

alrighty i got illinoise, and i love it and listened to it twice through that night without even realizing it. i told my friend that if he has a better album, i'm not sure if i could handle it. fortunately i've been told that there is no better album, so i guess i'm safe.

Illinois is great! I also have Seven swans, and it's quite mellow and very acoustic. One of my favourite songs is Borderline, though, which doesn't appear in any albums. I got it from a friend, and it's just perfect. You can see Sufjian play it on youtube, if you've never heard it.

I only have Illinois and I've been looking around all the used cd places for his other stuff but I might have to break down and buy it new.
