Too much cuisine, not enough gardening. It's time to discuss Kudzu - the plant that ate the south.

Go!

yes, and in my family's neck of the woods, everything looks covered in a big green blanket.
it's a parasite. it's scary. it grows an inch a second. if you stood in kudzu overnight, you probably couldn't move in the morning.

I don't think it grows an inch a second. The kudzu I've seen has been scarily prevalent but it doesn't move visibly to the human eye. I don't think.

exaggeration is no joke with kudzu. give it a few generations of evolution, and i'm sure it will be approaching your homes quickly. Smile

I have no idea what it is, but if it's a vine that climbs up things, it looks gorgeous. I love that look.
Granted, it isnt everywhere here.

On my front balcony, I have (some type) of vine covering the entire front balconly lattuce, and the supports to the ground.

If trimmed and such, it wont overthrow civilization.

You're a fan of ivy, not kudzu.

The stuff on my lattuce looks more like Kudzu, than Ivy.
Considering it's not ivy.

And now that I see it, we do have lots of that stuff around here.
But it's not called Kudzu, and it's not native.

It's "Japanese creeping vine" or something like that. And it's choking the crap out of one of the forests around here, and it's so bad the city is enacting a removal program.

That's a nickname for kudzu. Kudzu was brought to the US (and apparently Canada) from Japan and China. And it chokes forests. And cars, as you can see.

I'm pretty sure it was introduced in the southern US, which would explain the lacking in the north. Ivy has different appearances, but it doesn't eat vehicles overnight.

It's coming north to get us, though...
