So when I get "hot chocolate" at the college kiosk or a place like Boston Coffee, is it actually hot chocolate or hot cocoa?

That's impossible to know.
That's like asking if Country Thyme lemonade is made from real lemons, or urine.

it's not really impossible to know. if you tell me a little about the taste or texture or if you see them make it i can easily tell you.

though i can pretty safely guess right now that it's hot cocoa.

Well, you just prolonged the off-topicness, because now I have to say "HA! <3". But in order to save face: I could totally go for some hot chocolate right now...or cocoa. Either one, really.

Things to make it delicious!

And I'm serious. I have a lot of chocolate and a lot of milk. And I want hot chocolate.

okay. well my all time favorite hot chocolate is just a classic parisian hot chocolate which is just chocolate, milk and brown sugar or cinnamon. what makes it really delicious is that it's about the same ratio of milk to chocolate (by weight, maybe just a tad bit less chocolate) so it's very rich. i make it usually with just a spoonful or so of brown sugar and some flecks of fleur de sel on the top to really make it pop. also, i'm hoping you have a nice chocolate because that's what really makes it delicious. i have other recipes if you're looking for something a little more exciting but this is fantastic. do you need further instructions?

In a pan on the stove? Double boiler?

Also, how do you make marshmallows? Or you can save that for later in a separate thread.

heat the milk first (obviously being careful not to scald it) and chop the chocolate finely and stir it in until it melts.

also, don't you have the french laundry cookbook? that's where i make my marshmallows from.

My dad has the autographed French Laundry cookbook. I should figure out how to get my hands on one. My favorite cookbooks are Dean & Deluca and Saveur Cooks Authentic American.

But as for me right now, I'm going to make some hot chocolate.

It was so rich and thick. I felt like vomiting afterwards (in a good way). I think I forced myself to eat too much.

I just need to make more of it. The first time it was way too thick, but I liked the consistency of the second time. What else is fun to add in it, Miss Lily?

I'm not Lily, but: have some BISCOTTI with it!

fresh mint, caramel, flavored whipped creams, cayenne, meyer lemon zest, handmade marshmallows, black teas, chai and of course the brown sugar and cinnamon i mentioned earlier. those are just a few of my favorite things. i have some more out there ones and i have some combinations of these that are nice!
and yeah, it's very much on a personal basis how much chocolate and milk you add. if you liked the richness and not the consistency you can mix in some cream with the milk and reduce the amount of chocolate.
i love cookies but i don't really love biscotti, actually. and i think a really lihgt cookie would be nice with this. or a cinnamon sugar cruton with brown butter. mmmmm.
