So, who does everyone think is the greatest ever band? Your opinion can be based on the band's contribution to music, maybe their sentimentality to you or just because you love their style or sound.

Personally, I'm going to say Iron Maiden. They helped to establish metal as a genre, their songs carry a lot of meaning and they're very patriotic, one of the best bands England have produced. That and they sound fucking awesome as well.

So, post who you think is a contender for the best band (remember this doesn't have to be your favourite band), and why you like them so much.

Above the greatest bands and all the others
Stands our small but steadfast band of brothers.

Tool. Followed by a monumentous period.

Their compositions are extremely articulate with detail and sound fucking amazing. Maynard J. Keenan's vocals and lyrics are exceptional and some of the best in metal or prog rock. Tool's whole attitude towards simply making awesome music and cutting out the whole egotistical rock band bullshit makes them, I feel anyways, a very admirable band. Any band can take example from them. They seriously are ahead of the time.

I really thought you were calling Angie's Army of Midgets a tool. My first thought was that you should protect your kneecaps.

Oh no.

Since when does Angie have a midget army? What the hell's been going on?

I'm going to say Nirvana.

Like them or hate them, they've undeniably changed what music now sounds like.

If it wasn't for Nirvana, there wouldn't have been grunge. Which means no STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, NIN, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam or Temple of the Dog.

The Foo Fighters would at least be different for sure.

well they were the first and definitely had an influence. those bands might have still existed but they sure would have sounded different.

I agree with your second paragraph, but the third one is waaaaay too much of an overstatement. Nearly all of those bands were contemporaries of Nirvana, Nirvana just had arguably the biggest success. All of those bands would still have existed, they may even have written the same exact songs, but they got a lot more radio and TV play because of Nirvana's incredible popularity with "Nevermind." I think Nirvana influenced later "alternative" musicians and bands but the ones you listed (except Foo Fighters obviously) were all doing the same sort of thing around the same time or even earlier than Nirvana.

And let's not forget how much Nirvana (openly) owes to bands like The Pixies.
